ANEL has made significant progress in regards to the Action Plan approved some months ago.

The Department of Environment (from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment) has identified and approved a piece of land at Latsia Municipality that will be used for the construction of the Intermunicipal Reuse Centre in the District of Nicosia. This land is governmental and the necessary governmental procedures have been completed in order to move forward with the project.

The new reuse centre will aim to create a link between the circular economy and social employment, providing job and training programmes to disadvantaged individuals. Training programmes and courses for people that will operate the re-use centres and networks is envisaged as part of the capacity-building activities.

The space will be accessible for people with reduced mobility. It will have a total of 2,000-2,500 m2 for indoor spaces and 3,000-3,500 m2 for the needs of open spaces. The centres will include a parking lot, reception area, exchange area, warehouse, repair point, and second-hand shop.

The construction of the Intermunicipal Reuse Centre is approved to be funded by the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan, and its development and management will be co-financed through the LIFE+ Program and the LIFE IP WASTE project.

Nicosia Development Agency (ANEL) has acquired the role of the intermediary consultative body between the Ministry, the Municipalities, and other organisations (academia, NGOs, and private industry) for supporting the design and implementation of innovative and efficient projects in the waste management and circular economy field. Therefore, its efforts will be essential for the practical implementation of the Action Plan.

The Department of Environment and ANEL are committed to the completion of the Intermunicipal Reuse Centre, which will help with the collection, sorting and distribution of re-usable products and materials. This is an important step towards a circular economy in Cyprus.
