The European Green Deal is a game changer for our society at large, and for the European process
industries in particular. It aims notably to cut CO2 equivalent emissions by 50-55% by 2030 and to
transform Europe into the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. An unprecedented transformation
of production and consumption practices must be deployed at scale over less than 30 years.
In this regard, water is a crucial resource for the industrial sector, to which the circularity concept also
needs to be applied. This requires innovative technologies to deliver a step change in water efficiency,
recycling and security, to recover nutrients and other resources, to allow the industrial sector to access
to the right quantity and quality of water, and gradually reduce down to zero the discharges.
This will be necessary to contribute to the achievement of a Water-Smart Society.
