WiSAR Technology Gateway, located at Letterkenny Institute of Technology (Donegal, Ireland), has recently received Research Equipment Investment from Enterprise Ireland.

WiSAR has been one of the 37 successful applicants from across the Third Level Sector in Ireland that have secured over €6 million in funding through the Technology Gateway and Technology Centre Programmes, administered by Enterprise Ireland and recently announced by Irish Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys TD.

The Department of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering of the LYIT will now acquire a portable 8-axis high precision scanning arm to assist the manufacturing industry in the North-West of Ireland. Among others, the skilled mechanical engineers will be able to improve product inspection measures for quality and process control. According to WiSAR, this equipment will be used to scan precision engineering objects enabling accurate 3D modelling from the scans. As they explain, eight-axis range of movement will enable complete rotation of the object being measured in real time, meaning that there should be no difficulty reaching around the object, and no need to move the arm into different locations within the process.

Speaking to Donegal Daily local paper, Dr. Jim Morrison, Director of the WiSAR Technology Gateway at LYIT, stated that “the scanner allows for very precise measurement of complex objects and will enable industry in the North-West to confirm that their designs and processes fit with the highest international quality standards. Companies within NW manufacturing (and across the Technology Gateway network) will now be able to avail of these services from LYIT with the back-up of skilled mechanical engineers from the Dept. of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering.”

About WiSAR and Technology Gateway

The WiSAR Lab is part of the Technology Gateway Network, which provides near-to-market solutions for business and industry. Since 2013, over 1,000 Irish based companies have benefited from Technology Gateways to complete more than 2,500 innovation-based projects at a total value of over €24 million.
