[NEWS] BSC: Mobility as a service

A analysis of mobiity as a service in Slovenia

The MaaS Aliance EU defines Mobility as a Service as the integration of various forms of transport services into a single mobility service accessible on demand. A tool to provide a single mobility service are platforms or APPs.

MaaS Aliance further explains that in order for the MaaS “to meet a customer’s request, a MaaS operator facilitates a diverse menu of transport options, be the public transport, ride-, car- or bike-sharing, taxi or car rental/lease, or a combination thereof. For the user, MaaS can offer added value through use of a single application to provide access to mobility, with a single payment channel instead of multiple ticketing and payment operations. For its users, MaaS should be the best value proposition, by helping users to meet their mobility needs and solve the inconvenient parts of individual journeys as well as the entire system of mobility services. «

In Slovenia a first such APP is being developed by AMZS – Automotive Association of Slovenia. The concept of this particular MaaS APP is that it doesn’t focus only on electric micro-mobility services and navigation services. As it is common in such APPs, it integrates different service providers, their platforms, APPs with different mobility modes. The chosen path from start to finish provides multi-modal choices. The user will be able to use all the integrated services like renting an electric vehicle, unlocking and locking it, paying for the service or to find tourism services and get some fun facts on how many kg of CO2 will be saved by a user’s choice of mobility, compared to the equivalent of the tree efficiency, how many calories the user will spend compared by the training hours in fitness. The market launch of the APP is at this moment unknow. The APP is still in the development phase. AMZS gained a letter of support from the Ministry of Infrastructure and invested 100% of their own financial means into the development.

In comparison, Google maps for many years offers besides the usual navigation information and tourism services, street view, user photos ... the links directly to Flixbus services, railway services, calculates walking distance or any distance choosing a particular transport mode. Recently the user can also find in some city’s services of micro mobility, when choosing a walking mode, like bike-sharing, scooter-sharing … where the user gets the information of the service price and can also manage the whole rental. However, the Google map platform has a limited multi-modal split provision of services per trip.
