Four years have passed since Smart specialisation officially entered EU policy framework and have been integrated into the national policy strategies of the member states. The purpose of this conference is to discuss the progress of Smart specialisation implementation, take a closer look at the lessons learned from the first half of the implementation phase as well as to glance at the future prospects of this approach to regional development.

The second day of the conference is dedicated to the Peer exchange and Learning workshop on Monitoring for Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3). This PXL Workshop is built on the peer-review methodology from the Smart Specialisation Platform oF the DG JRC. It is organised by the Smart Specialisation Platform in co-operation with MOSTA. It brings together national, regional and sub-regional policy makers from EU countries, representatives from the European Commission and researchers on the field. The aim is to explore the main challenges associated to the setting up of an effective monitoring system and the use of monitoring information to improve strategies' performance and future policy development.
