City of Iasi
Iasi is the most important political, economic and cultural center of the North-East Region as well as one of the oldest cities in Romania. Iasi was for many centuries the crossing point of the most important commercial routes linking Poland, Hungary, Russia and Constantinople. Deeply rooted in history and known as the Cultural Capital of Romania, Iasi has been the main center of Moldavian culture since 1408. The city prides itself on publishing the first Romanian newspaper and establishing the first Romanian university. Iasi is also the home city of George Emil Palade, the only Romanian who was ever awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine back in 1974.
