REVIVING THE FORTRESS NETWORKS

Thursday 25 November 2021, 14:00 - 14:30, CONNECTED

Forts are often part of a larger defense system with multiple forts in a circle (belt) around a city or line structure next to a border. Currently this system needs help, after loss of militaire purpose forts and city wall structures are reused by different associations and their common cause as system is affected. It is the objective to reactivate the network in a new context – to bring back the DNA of forts and city wall structures to be part of a larger fortress system and to build again the system of forts as a strong NETWORK for leisure, recreation, social use and also to connect the multiple forts again to the city or border. It is also about building a fortress COMMUNITY, the benefits are multiple: promotion and communication of the whole system reaching wider audience and visitors as a form of sustainable tourism (walking, cycling between forts are the perfect getaway), support of forts in specific advice and expertise in for example restauration techniques (craftsmen academy?) or stimulating start-up of entrepreneurs in forts, funding support for restauration of multiple forts, start new innovative projects. From within this network also VISION is important as the former design of the fortress network(s) have a military strategy and architectural origin and background. Currently this militairy use is not longer needed (luckily). Instead other needs come up such as need for green accessible parks, new touristic routes, events or festivals and all kind of cultural activitities, by activating the network and community the next step is vision development. This step is needed to make new plans or projects so the fortress network can be strong, innovative & self-sufficient. This project idea is written and initiated by the Antwerp Regional Landscapes (Belgium) and supported by city of Antwerp & Dendermonde (Belgium) and Magdeburg (Germany) – al three cities have old defensive city walls and forts belt around the city. We are looking for partners with the same fortress situation and ambition.
