Transforming stone built mountainous villages into sustainable tourist destinations

Thursday 25 November 2021, 13:00 - 13:30, CONNECTED

In the Region of Western Macedonia, Greece, there is a number of villages built in a traditional stone way by famous builders of their time. Most of those villages face a serious demographic problem and some of them are even uninhabited. We need to find a way to restore this heritage stone built villages, in order to create a new cultural image for the entire Region. Ensuring, through a specific action plan, funding for their renovation and probable alteration into small hotels, restaurants, shops etc is required in order to create a new mountainous tourist destination in the area. This can be combined with the Byzantine and meta-Byzantine churches/monuments as well as with the skiing resorts of the Region. Since we are one of the coal economy based regions under transition, this might be an alternative solution for the transition of our Region to a post-lignite era, leading to the overall change of the Region's profile.
