As PE4Trans is designed to develop and change mobility habits into more sustainable ones, influencing the youngest part of society seems to be the best idea. That’s why District of Graftschaft Bentheim, one of the partner of PE4Trans project, focuses on pupils and school transportation.
All the project partners, including District of Graftschaft Bentheim organised the citizens panel – a meeting with local community aimed to improve public transport solutions. The event organised by German partner took place on 29th of November 2018. 15 people participated in the meeting.
When applying to PE4Trans project, District of Graftschaft Bentheim decided to improve local transport plan by using project methodology specifically for changing school transportation habits. They intended to carry out a project week on "sustainable mobility" at schools with subsequent workshops. The main questions to be answered were: how to put the project weeks into a school year schedule? how to engage the students into the topic of "sustainable mobility"? which age groups should be invited to reach project assumptions?
And how about the conclusions?
Dedicated syllabus will be designed by District of Graftschaft Bentheim as a base for school seminars and interesting source of information for pupils. Additionally, the sustainable transport weeks will be organised with the participation of transport companies, local authorities, community trendsetters and experts. It is also planned to carry out dedicated camps, where pupils from different schools in the district of Grafschaft Bentheim, who are highly interested in the topic, come together in a neutral place.
The participants of the meeting worked on some visions of sustainable transport of the future as well. The four most interesting are:
- Completely free public transport for everyone
- Raising the students’ awareness about the importance of sustainable public transport
- All public transport should be electrical (both public and private)
- Establish public transport as a natural means of transport
