Survey on Cycling in Prague
Published on 06 November 2018
This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
City of Prague runs a survey on cycling in Prague every two years. The first survey was done in 2008. Applied methodology provide us with comparable data in time.
So we get information about current attitudes and obstacles in cycling in the City, as well as an important information about changes in time.
The survey is realized by an external specialized company chosen in public procurement, therefore the need for capacity of municipal employees is not so high.
The questionnaire is to high extent similar as surveys elaborated in previous years, although some changes are made every year with regard to actual situation.
The key information we gather is about how many citizens cycle, why they do or do not cycle and what are main obstacles for more cycling, as well as incentives leading to the change of their behaviour.
We also get the information about preferred measures for improving cycling conditions in the city.
One of results is the number of potential cyclists (citizens who state they would like to cycle if we improve cycling conditions)
We also ask respondents for their opinion regarding the support of cycling in general in order to get the feedback from general public.

Resources needed
Financial resources for hiring a specialized company and approx. 1 person (for approx. 1 month) who checks and corrects the survey as well as spreads the results.
Evidence of success
Important information for any decision-making of public bodies in the City, reliable data about number of cyclists, list of the most preferred measures as well as the most important obstacles.
Potential for learning or transfer
Due to progress made during last years, technology allowed us to receive many data about transportation in cities. Nevertheless, these data do not usually cover cycling and walking. Moreover, it is hard to get an information about public opinion on these topics.
We want to make any decision based on data and knowledge, but we need to get such information prior to it. This tool helps us to get appropriate knowledge about soft/ small infrastructure projects aimed at cycling and thus improve our priority setting. This tool is fully transferable.
