About this good practice
Pilgrims center in Vadstena, Ösergötland, Sweden had two pilgrimtrails, to a part based on old routes. From Alvastra to Vadstena 35 km, Krokek to Vadstena, 130 km. But the Pilgrim center organisation was too small to maintain the long one. So today there is a marked trail from Alvastra to Vadstena and a description of the the trail from Krokek to Vadstena. And a trail from Linköping to Vadstena, as a description on paper and digital. The latter one runs just on roads and along Göta channel. Signing is in that case not necessary.
When planning a new route for the trail from Alvastra to Vadstena maintenance was a part of the planning and the trail was planned as a an extension of Östgötaleden wich is a system of public trails. That trail have funding for maintenance based on local associations such as sports and outdoor clubs.

Resources needed
Staff according to the length and type of trail.
Evidence of success
Today the marked trail is possible to maintain in a good manner and the unmarked trail is easy to follow as it just runs on roads. The new trail, thanks to cooperation, has a more solid ground for maintenance.
Potential for learning or transfer
It takes a lot of work to maintain a trail. Part of the planning for new trails must be the consideration of how much maintenance work that is required and how much work the organisation can bear. The length of the trail and type of terrain must match what the organisation can cope with. If the organisation is small other options than marked trail must be considered, for example digital solutions.
