About this good practice
ACTIVAGE is a European Multi Centric Large-Scale Pilot on Smart Living Environments, funder by the European Horizon 2020 innovation programme.
The main objective is to build the first European IoT ecosystem, reusing and scaling up underlying open IoT platforms, technologies and standards. These interfaces will need to be integrated to provide interoperability across platforms, which will enable in turn the deployment and operation at large scale of Active & Healthy Ageing IoT-based solutions and services. These services will support and extend the independent living of older adults in their living environments, and respond to the needs of caregivers, service providers and public authorities.
Due to the economical context in Greece and the ageing trends, the main healthcare stakeholders and National Governmental entities need with the increase in healthcare costs. They are looking to identify open-source low-cost Ambient Assisted Living services that will permit them to offer high-quality improved home care for elderly but with minimum cost.
The ACTIVAGE Greek pilot site is testing home installations such as motion sensors, door sensors, and panic buttons, to monitor daily behavioural activity and give the alert in case of an urgent situation.

Resources needed
The project benefitted from 25 million euros of funding. The project objective is to use open-source software to minimise operational costs after the end of the project.
Evidence of success
In the case of the Greek pilot, 182 users have already been recruited and 329 devices have been installed in 48 homes.
Potential for learning or transfer
The ACTIVAGE consortium is creating the first European IoT ecosystem across 9 Deployment Sites in 7 European countries.
The ACTIVAGE approach is based both upon open legacy platforms and interoperability tools and methodologies. Both these concepts encourage transferability.
Training has already been provided to 41 informal carers and 4 formal carers, in the Greek case.
