About this good practice
The transformation of the German energy system is in full swing and is a central component of a sustainable, economically successful future. For this reason, the federal government has earmarked additional funds in its new federal budget for the expansion of Fraunhofer energy research. Based on future scenarios and a portfolio analysis, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has proposed a new institute for geothermal energy and energy infrastructure, which, by establishing a new research focus in Lusatia and supplementing existing capacities in North Rhine-Westphalia, will build a new bridge between the regions in western and eastern Germany that are particularly affected by structural change.
Due to the dramatic cost reductions in the production of renewable electrical energy, the German energy system is undergoing a profound transformation. The development of technologies for coupling heat supply and transport to regeneratively generated electricity can strengthen Germany as a technology location in the long term. First, however, a number of central technological challenges need to be solved. The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft therefore expressly supports the political project to strengthen Germany's prominent position in energy research.

Resources needed
22,6 million EUR (2021 – 2024) institutional funding budget
Evidence of success
- Recruiting of the founding director and other employees
- Occupation of the institute rooms
- Initiation of first projects

Potential for learning or transfer
The EU and its Member States are parties to the Paris Climate Convention. Thus, besides Germany, other EU countries are also facing the challenge of CO2 reduction. An institute can support this sector by advancing Research.
