About this good practice
The Institute of Low CO2 Industrial Processes expands German Aerospace Center research portfolio with the new focus on CO2 reduction for industrial processes.
The spectrum includes renewable energy sources, energy conversion technologies and energy storage as well as energy system analysis.
The thematic and competence area will thus be extended to cover the specific requirements and research needs for the decarbonisation of large energy-intensive industrial sectors (power plants, steel production, cement industry, petrochemical industry, chemical industry, aluminium production). At the same time, the research topics of the institute complement the activities for sustainable power generation and storage.
In this way, the Institute strengthens DLR's competencies in a socially and economically highly relevant area of energy research and makes a significant contribution to the major challenge of significantly reducing CO2 and pollutant emissions from industrial processes and power plants in the coming decade.

Potential for learning or transfer
The EU and its Member States are parties to the Paris Climate Convention. Thus, besides Germany, other EU countries are also facing the challenge of CO2 reduction in the energy-intensive industrial sector. An Institute can support this sector.
