During the summer, partners have been sharing information about their fortresses related to economic aspects and financing mechanisms. It was a successful campaign as we have reached more than 2.500 people. #FinancingFortresses was the third campaign of the six that are planned for this year.

This is the summary of the campaign:

Czech Republic

Terezin

The association Terezin – město změny was founded by the municipality of Terezín and the Ústí Region in 2009 to receive a European grant and repair some monuments in Terezín. Since then, he has taken care of part of the Terezín fortress and presents its old history as a fortification. In terms of financing, it receives a contribution from the municipality and the region, but more than half of its income comes from rents and entrance fees.

Magdeburg – Ravelin 2

With a hands-on-history approach, the volunteer restoration association ‘Sanierungsverein Ravelin 2 e.V.’ redevelops the Ravelin 2 - fortifications of 1873 in Magdeburg in cooperation with the city, who is the owner of the site. Around 70 members of different ages and professions contribute from their fields of expertise.

Since 2014, the committed citizens in the association have contributed more than 45,000 working hours into the (re)development of the fortifications. The goal is to develop the site into a touristic place.

The association’s work is financed through the organization of events and the acquisition of donations and funding. It is a real challenge for the volunteers to cover the part of the own contributions of funding. For the construction of the sanitary facilities as an important project step, crowdfunding was a very successful measure for covering the own contributions. It was organized by members of the association through a crowdfunding platform of ‘Volksbank Magdeburg’, which is a regional cooperative bank. Under the slogan ‘sanitary palaces for our guests’ 15,000 € were collected. Further funding was necessary, coming from Lotto Saxony-Anhalt.

The crowdfunding had the positive side effect of raising more awareness for the project through different publicity channels. The design of the sanitary facilities is stylistically based on the fortress architecture and of a rustic-historical character.

Think along! Dream the fortress of Lier

In the context of the RFC project, the fortress of Lier will be open for the public on the 11th and 12th of September, there will be guided tours and people can give their idea for a new destination. This approach builds further on the PP2’s expertise meeting (RSM) on 22th of June that has gathered a lot of expertise on the topic of financing of heritage.

From many cases, we learned that people, friends and volunteers of our heritage are the most important capital. All weekend long people will discover the unique fortress and can dream about the future and potential of the fortress. Ideas will be shared and after the weekend in September, a participation process will follow in autumn 2021 to develop a long-term vision for the fortress.

Albarracín

The project for revegetation and reconstruction of the Albarracín wall continues. Presented by the Provincial Government of Teruel as a case of discussion in one of the Thematic Workshops held by the partners of the RFC project, it represents one of the activities that once again receives funding from the Regional Government of Aragon.

Thus, the reconstruction of a new part of the wall that was already planned, but pending to receive new funds will be carried out. The Santa María de Albarracín Foundation is doing a great job to preserve the walled environment of one of the most beautiful municipalities in Spain.
