During the last couple of months, partners have been sharing information about their fortresses related to social use, public space, recreation and tourism. It was a successful campaign as we have reached more than 3.000 people. #FortressesSocialUse was the fourth campaign of the six that are planned for this year.

This is the summary of the campaign:

Czech Republic

Terezin

The main attractions of the Terezín fortress are the underground mine corridors. The local underground spaces reach approximately 34 km. Some parts are open to the public as guided tours. Visitors walk through them in the light of lanterns, but we have also prepared a barrier-free route for wheelchair users.

Visit Mechelen

Visit Mechelen rediscovers its city wall structure PP2’s scope on the topic of recreation and tourism is Mechelen as the touristic department of Mechelen is PP2’s main stakeholder for the former fortress city (visit Mechelen). Unfortunately almost the entire fortification of the city of Mechelen has disappeared, only one of the 12 city gates has been remained, the Brussels Gate.

Luckily the city structure of the ring has also survived, but unfortunately as a busy ring road. The city now aspires to a more car-free approach and starts new urban developments and public spaces that refers to the former city walls. And also new tourist products such as guided city walks or bike tours are currently being made as part of the whole RFC project. PP2’s next Regional Stakeholders Meeting is planned this autumn with the city of Mechelen as host. More info will follow soon.

Castle of Peracense

In the magnificent castle of Peracense a medieval reenactment takes place every year during the first week of August. This recreation has the peculiarity of representing what happened 800 years before.

During this activity, tourists enjoy a medieval market and a visit to the castle that is furnished and decorated as it was in the 12th century.

Recreational groups from all over Aragon travel there, as well as from other nearby regions to give life to the castle as it was in the Middle Ages.
