Context

Small and Family businesses play a considerable role in the European economy, especially in regional development. They are significant drivers of employment and growth and play a distinctive role in the prosperity of local communities.

But business transfers between generations can be a life-or-death situation for many small businesses, with only 30% of family-owned companies surviving the succession phase.

Because of their essential role in the economy, each SME failed succession process threatens the EU economic structure, regional job markets, and regional competitiveness.

Interreg Success Road

The project consortium believes that building a well-calibrated, business-friendly regulatory environment that allows family businesses to overcome the succession phase and bolsters investments and innovation will support the long-term success of European SMEs. As evidenced by the COVID pandemic, and the high inflation rates, the issues surrounding SMEs’ resilience and competitiveness have become crucial, and national and regional governments are positively reacting with new incentives and tax measures to support them.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Development and Investments of the Hellenic Republic, the Success Road project brings together public and private actors to guide and support regional and national authorities from Greece, Lithuania, Spain, and Poland to shape policy instruments that allow European manufacturing SMEs to better face the succession phase and secure their future after a change of ownership
