WINPOL has already been a source of inspiration for the new Mehedinti Waste Management County Plan 2019-2025, approved in January 2020 and will contribute further to reduce the number of non-compliant landfills and increase recycling preparedness in Romania through three actions on waste collection and prevention.

Action 1: Development of a network of 67 waste collection points

67 waste collection points, of 200-400 m2, will be created, one in each rural / urban UAT, except in Drobeta Turnu Severin where it will be 2 points. The action will be implemented in different steps through a collaboration between the County, the municipalities and the cities and communities in the Country. It will start with the mobilisation of the new Large Infrastructure Operational Programme 2021-2027, the promotion of the concept to the actors involved and the future users, and the preparation of general terms of reference. One of the last steps before the actual implementation will be to develop a unified software with separate users which will have rights to use it with their local sub-systems.

Implementation time frame: 2021 – 2025

Estimated costs: EUR 3,350,000

Action 2: Creation of 5 collection platforms for construction and demolition waste

5 sites of 4,000m2, one in each collection area of the County, will be created to collect construction and demolition waste (both from households and business) on a radius of 50 km. The action will be implemented in a collaboration between the County, the municipalities and the cities and communities in the County, and citizens and businesses. After the mobilisation of the new Large Infrastructure Operational Programme 2021-2027, the action will be promoted to inform citizens and professionals (hotels, restaurants, etc.), other stakeholders/players, and the public. A call for proposals will be launched to prepare the implementation.

Implementation time frame: 2021 – 2025

Estimated costs: EUR 5,000,000

Action 3: Actions to prevent and minimize household waste generation through trainings targeting school students

As part of this action, a specialised mobile app will be developed to support awareness-raising activities on waste prevention and minimisation for students of primary and secondary schools. This app could include or be upgraded to be used with other initiatives like a database of reusable items, etc.

Implementation time frame: 2021 – 2025

Estimated costs: EUR 5,000,000
