Last month, in September 2021, EMULSA started the recruitment of volunteers to join its pilot project of PAYT. Until November 2021, neighbour associations will help finding 750 households in two districts of Gijón that will participate in the experiment. The call to find has been massively relayed in the local press with articles for example in La Nueva Espana, Residuos Profesional, Europapress.

After that and until the end of the pilot in June 2022, data will be collected, monitored, and analysed. It will enable EMULSA to determine the average waste amounts generated per the different types of households.

This pilot is part of EMULSA’s Action Plan to study the implementation of a pilot-pay-as-you-throw scheme in Gijón. The purpose of the pilot is to define the different set of variables for the PAYT system that could then be implemented in the whole municipality. It will be accompanied by a campaign, designed with the help of an external consultant, to raise awareness on the waste separation obligation and analyze if it is feasible to implement this type of rate in Gijon and the possible blockages in the citizens.
