This international carpool lane between the Swiss and French border will be available only for those cars carrying at least two passengers. It is the latest effort to fight traffic and congestion, and it was opened on October 8, 2018. During the first year it is considered as an experiment, and it will open in the morning for cars heading to Geneva, and in the opposite direction in the afternoon.
This pilot project is part of a joint initiative between the Geneva Department of Infrastructure and the Mont Blanc Autoroutes and Tunnel, which have estimated the reduction of this route in approximately a third of its time.
The carpool lane runs for one kilometre, for 550 metres on the French side of the border and 450 metres on the Swiss side. The use of this lane without the presence of a second passenger will be considered as an infraction, but will just be fined on the French side of the border.
