Within the framework of a meeting of the 100.000+ City network, the Interreg Europe project EU Cycle, in which the Euregio Rhine-Waal is active as project partner since 1 August 2019, was presented. The 100,000+ city network is an initiative of the cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants within the Euregio Rhine-Waal (Nijmegen, Arnhem, Ede, Moers, Duisburg and Düsseldorf). The network aims to contribute actively to the development of the region, its position between the Dutch “Randstad”, the Rhine-Ruhr area in Germany and at European level through the exchange of knowledge, insights and experiences. They jointly develop cooperation projects and represent the region's interests at provincial, federal, national and European level. In doing so, the network puts a special focus on sustainable urban development in accordance with the EU 2020 guidelines on "Intelligent, sustainable and inclusive growth", as well as on sustainable energy, healthy cities and social cohesion.
The members of the network are important stakeholders for the EU CYCLE project, which aims to contribute to the better quality of regional cycling projects, to raise the share of cycling in the partner regions through via improved policies in order to achieve a higher impact on CO²-neutral transport in European regions. Intelligent mobility also plays an important role for the 100.000+ network, which has recently launched a regional analysis to catalogue regional fast cycle routes and explore possible opportunities to better connect them.
