The deep integration of packaging in consumers’ everyday life, and its influence on ecology and economy, makes packaging a very important area in achieving sustainable growth. Global food production would be enough for the growing global population if food waste can be reduced – currently about 40 % of food never reach consumers. Adequate packaging is the most effective way to safeguard food supply and prevent waste. According to various surveys the environmental effect of packaging (or packaging waste) is 10 times less than that of food (waste) thus the main role of packaging is prevention. Packaging is able to prevent the environment from the biggest problems caused by food (and any other product) waste.
