Milton Keynes Council engages with the citizens of the city and approves funding of £500,000 to provide greener transport initiatives towards more sustainable and active transport.
The people of Milton Keynes have shown clear interest in ‘greener, people-powered journeys’ with figures showing nearly 60% increase in people cycling in some areas since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Milton Keynes Council has matched community interest with ambitious plans in place to encourage more people to cycle, walk, scoot or use public transport.
The funding of green initiatives are not only reserved towards making the city of Milton Keynes greener and more sustainable. The proposed package also aims to promote the mental and physical health and wellbeing of the community, further support the post-Covid green recovery plan by encouraging active forms of transport for daily commuters, promote visits to the many green spaces in the city, and support local independent shops and eateries spread across the new city.
The Milton Keynes Council effectively engages with its active community by funding more sustainable plans while also improving fitness levels among its citizens and increasing enjoyment of outdoor scenery.
According to Councillor Lauren Townsend, Cabinet Member for Transport, “we want these new initiatives to encourage people to change their behaviours…we aim to make it easier for everyone to travel around MK, particularly on foot, by bike and public transport.”
