Mayor Gorka Urtaran and the general director of the Basque Energy Agency, Iñigo Ansola, signed an agreement that lays the foundations for the implementation of sustainable energy measures and renewable projects within the "Vitoria-Gasteiz Green Deal¨
Mayor Gorka Urtaran and the general director of the Basque Energy Agency, Iñigo Ansola, signed a collaboration agreement this morning to promote Vitoria-Gasteiz as a reference in the application of innovative solutions in the key of sustainability.
Under the terms of the agreement, the City Council and EVE will carry out feasibility studies to determine the potential for using renewable energies (biogas, photovoltaic solar energy, biomass and others) and to improve energy efficiency in various municipal locations.
For instance, projects such as the photovoltaic solar plant on the grounds of the Gardelegi landfill site will be analysed; the use of biogas generated at the Gardelegi landfill site for injection into the natural gas distribution network; the creation of energy communities to promote renewable generation in the city and the launch of pilot projects to implement sustainable mobility systems related to the use of renewable energies, among other initiatives.
In addition, the commitment of both institutions is to propose different alternatives for the exploitation of these renewable resources and to improve energy efficiency.
The agreement also provides the drafting and launching of an Action Plan for the implementation of energy efficiency measures in the municipality, within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors.
The City Council and EVE will also collaborate in testing the methodological guide for drawing up municipal Energy Plans in Vitoria-Gasteiz and in defining indicators within the framework of the Intensify project, a collaboration initiative with other European countries in which Vitoria-Gasteiz is participating with the aim of encouraging the reduction of CO2 emissions and involving citizens.
Both entities will collaborate in organizing awareness and dissemination conferences on matters related to energy efficiency, the use of renewable resources, the promotion of active customer figures and energy communities, among others.
