Scientists have invented a new way to turn plastic waste into liquid fuel. It uses less energy than previous methods and produces a better quality product.
The technique breaks down polyethylene - the most popular plastic in the world, of which everything is made - transparent foil, food packaging, water bottles, bags. About 100 million tonnes are produced each year.
A durable solution to the plastic problem cannot come soon enough. We dumped it in landfills, which killed people, buried it in the ground and allowed it to accumulate in the oceans to form giant floating garbage islands. It is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050.
