Promoting autonomous, sustainable and safe school mobility in the 13th Meeting of the Spanish National Network of Educating Cities (RECE)
The Municipality of Girona presented a poster in the 13th Meeting of the Spanish National Network of Educating Cities (RECE) in Lleida. It gathered more than 250 participants from 86 different Spanish Cities. This network belongs to the International Association of Educating Cities (IAEC). It is a non-profit association, founded in 1994, constituted as a permanent collaborative structure uniting local governments committed to the Charter of Educating Cities, which is the road map of the cities that comprise it.
“Rethinking the city” was the congress theme. There were three main topics: mobility in the city, the city as a meeting point and the children’s voice.
A poster on “Promotion of autonomous, sustainable and safe school mobility” was presented by María Mercedes Teixidor, head of the Mobility and Public Way Department of the Municipality of Girona (Spain). She explained the four phases targeted to change mobility school routines: approve the Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP); development of safe routes to schools; School Chance project as an exchange of experience good practices on school mobility; and a pilot-test in a school to promote school mobility on foot.
