The "Manifesto for safe, sustainable and autonomous mobility on home-school journeys" of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia was the only Italian case included among the 22 best practices on sustainable mobility selected by the United Nations and collected in the publication "Mobility Management. A guide of international good practices" available at: www.unece.org/index.php
"This recognition of the United Nations is a source of pride for the Municipality and an incentive to continue, even more so, on the path of sustainability and alternative mobility even for the youngest groups – said Carlotta Bonvicini, the Deputy Mayor for Sustainable Mobility and Environment of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia - This period of distance teaching and closure of most activities will lead us in a very short time to a global rethinking of the rhythms, times and spaces of the city. [..] In particular, it will be necessary to rethink the entire school system, bearing in mind that in the pre-Covid19 phase, the mobility of secondary school students was mainly guaranteed by public transport ".
The Municipality of Reggio Emilia will continue to work in synergy with the school system to redefine times and ways of school structures. In fact, over the past years, the Municipality has activated a series of policies to better manage the share of urban mobility linked to home-school trips, such as the introduction of the figure of the “School Mobility Manager” in compulsory schools. It has also activated projects such as BiciBus / PediBus, laboratories on mobility and cycling from kindergartens to secondary schools, school trips with sustainable means, school roads and "urban tattoos", as well as large investments dedicated to school infrastructures.
