Smart specialisation was one of the topics discussed during the European Week of Regions and Cities (EWRC) that was organised fully online this year. A topical concern and aim is to elevate the Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialisation (RIS3) to another level in the post-2020 EU programming period. One aspect is turning smart specialisation strategies (S3) into sustainable smart specialisation strategies (S4). S3 linked with the EU Green Deal is one way of promoting the development of S3 into S4. The resilience of innovation ecosystems was also discussed during EWRC, and totally in line with the TraCS3 ideology, it was stated that international connections make ecosystems flourish.
