On January the 22nd of 2021, two Regional Stakeholders Workshops took place in the framework of the European CAPonLITTER project. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, both of them were implemented online.

The purpose was to inform the stakeholders and to explore possible ways to reduce consumption and improve the collection of marine litter in coastal areas.
The workshops were attended by the Vice Governor of Crete on European and International Affairs, George Alexakis, the project coordinator and Deputy Head of the Department of Civil Protection Eleni Tzagkaraki, the external collaborators, Vassilis Zisimopoulos, Engineer, Michalis Chalkiadakis, Economist, Nikolaos Chalkias representative of Exelixis consultants (external expert), representatives of Municipalities and organisations (active in tackling coastal pollution), various scientists, local stakeholders and RoC’s Project team.
1st Regional Stakeholders Workshop
During the first workshop the answers recorded by the participants during their registration were presented regarding the biggest challenges, for the creation and organization of a coastal community with zero waste (zero-waste coastal community).
Attendees were asked to submit good practices for waste management, suggest solutions that could lead to waste reduction and evaluate any challenges.
Two Good Practices were presented, “Costa Nostrum – Sustainable Beaches” and “Smart Green Bins for Beaches”, aimed at improving policies in coastal areas. Online voting has highlighted Costa Nostrum – Sustainable Beaches as the Best Practice.

2nd Regional Stakeholders Workshop
In the second workshop, participants were asked to jointly highlight what would be the most important challenge for the creation of a new Good Practice. The most important challenge identified was "Behaviour, Education and Awareness".

The Good Practice "Adopt a Beach" which was formed, foresees the implementation of educational presentations to students as well as the training of teachers for the continuation of the Good Practice. It was also suggested the incorporation of a game, the use of social media as useful tools for the dissemination and implementation of the Good Practice.
