We, at CAPonLITTER, already stated the importance of the European Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Directive. This directive aims to prevent and tackle marine litter by, among other things, phasing out unnecessary single-use plastics, introducing economic incentives to reduce consumption and transition to reusable systems, as well as establishing high collection rates.

The SUP Directive will enter into force this Saturday, 3 July 2021. This means that, after it is transposed to the national law of each member-state, some measures that restrict or even ban some of the single-use plastic products will be imposed.

To help all the key actors on adapting to this, especially the ones involved in the travel and tourism sectors, so important for the CAPonLITTER project, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) launched the guide: 'Rethinking Single-Use Plastic Products in Travel & Tourism - Impacts, Management Practices and Recommendations'.

This guide covers many aspects of this problem, like the presence of plastics on the value chain of the sector, the trade-offs, public and private policy initiatives and consumer behaviour, recommendations for the businesses and for policymakers and also three case studies that help to understand and to apply these recommendations.
