The Institution

APA is the portuguese public institution whose mission is to propose, develop and monitor the integrated and participatory management of environment and sustainable development policies.

It accomplishes its mission through close and articulated cooperation with other public, private and civil society organizations. APA is based in Lisbon, has 894 workers and has 5 decentralized services - the Hydrographic Region Administrations, located in Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon, Évora and Faro - which are operational services for the management, monitoring and inspection of water resources including planning and management of coastal areas. As National Authority for Water, that works in close articulation with local authorities as with water and waste managing entities, APA is able  to influence and implement policies to support the best practices learned on CAPonLITTER.

APA was created in 2012 as a result of the merger of 9 distinct bodies. It is a modern public institute, integrated in the indirect administration of the State, endowed with administrative and financial autonomy and its own patrimony.
