The CAPonLITTER Kickoff Meeting took place in the Lisbon area, Portugal, in 23 and 24 November 2019, and was organized by the Lead Partner (LP), NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon (FCT-NOVA) and by Project Partner 2 (PP2), Portuguese Environment Agency (APA). On these two intense days, all the partners from the consortium met each other and began the preparation and management of our project!

DAY 1 - 23 November 2019

The first day meetings took place in the Lisbon Oceanarium, in Lisbon Portugal.

We had the pleasure of having in our welcome session, hosted by the Project Coordinator, José Carlos Ferreira, the Dean of FCT-NOVA - NOVA School of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon, Virgílio Cruz Machado, the President of APA – Portuguese Environment Agency, Nuno Lacasta, the President of the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering of FCT-NOVA, Júlia Seixas, and the Member of the Board of the Executive Committee of POSEUR – Operational Programme Sustainability and Efficiency on the Use of Resources, Manuela Matos. We were proud of having with us the high-responsibles of LP1 and PP2 and also from POSEUR, one of the Policy Instruments that CAPonLITTER project will address.

After this session, the participants presented itself and the different Project Partners. Cláudio Macedo Duarte, the Project Manager, presented an overview of the CAPonLITTER objectives, methodology and timeline, where all partners discussed the details. After lunch, the work focused on the management and financial aspects of CAPonLITTER project, session conducted by Juliana Monteiro (FCT-NOVA). At least, the CAPonLITTER Steering Group was nominated, with two representatives from each Project Partners. The Day 1 of the Kickoff Meeting ended with a guided tour to the Lisbon Oceanarium.

DAY 2 - 24 November 2019

Very early on the morning of Day 2, the group met near Eduardo VII park where a bus was waiting for them for a trip through the city of Setúbal, Arrábida Natural Park and Cape Espichel, where the group took a family photo.

The group then went to the Bar do Peixe restaurant in Meco Beach (Sesimbra municipality), where the meeting took place in the rest of the morning and after lunch. In this informal but productive environment, Lia Vasconcelos (FCT-NOVA), the CAPonLITTER coordinator for the participatory process, presented the methodology for the different workshops and meeting of the project. The participants also discussed and settled the timeline for the seven Interregional Learning Events (ILE).

After lunch, Cláudio Macedo Duarte coordinated the Communication Meeting, where the aspects of the internal and external communication were shared and discussed. The meeting ended with Marta Sousa, from Bar do Peixe restaurant, where she presented the good practices and initiatives that were implemented by the restaurant, like the avoidance of disposable and plastic products (water bottles, straws, etc.) and the exchange of collected marine litter for drinks and ice creams.

This concluded the Kickoff Meeting and the group was then taken back to Lisbon. It was two amazing days, where all the participants became much more motivated and coordinated to start the CAPonLITTER project and to work on its objectives!
