On November 6, 2020, Eddy Wille (OVAM) gave a lecture during the Geological Research Seminar at the Department of Geology of Ghent University on his contribution to “Dynamic Landfill Management: An Introduction to Anthropogenic Resource Management”. He highlighted the research carried out by the members of the Interreg projects COCOON and RAWFILL. The large number of former landfills requires a specific approach to set up sustainable, long-term management where landfills are no longer a threat but an asset.
Bringing these final waste disposal sites more into line with the principles of a circular economy was explained and demonstrated through pilots and full-scale operations. The application of improved inventories, geophysical prospecting and decision support tools was emphasized and associated with the tasks of geologists.
