With Phase 1 of the COCOON project concluded it is imperative to ensure that findings, practices and policies lead to action.

To this end, the COCOON project has been a source of inspiration for community based waste collection in Malta. With its widely distributed municipalities, the island nation Malta has launched a waste pick-up scheme to collect difficult wastestreams in the different municipalities. Once a month the Kerbside truck (also known as the Sort-it-Out truck) visits each community to collect:

  • Cooking Oil
  • Lightbulbs
  • Polystyrene
  • Textile
  • Paper & cardboard
  • Metal
  • Glass
  • Plastic

The trucks have been modified to receive each of these streams in dedicated, separate containers ensuring a significantly more efficient sorting and recycling process later on down the lifecycle of these products.
