This presentation was held by Eddy Wille (Public Waste Agency of Flanders, Belgium) at the thematic event focused on ‘environmental aspects of landfill management projects’ under the session ‘Impacts: leachates, soil protection, ground water, floods & landfills close to coast’. The event took place in Cordoba (Spain) on February 22, 2018.
In Texas 13 toxic landfill were flooded in 2017, and in 2018 the Seine was flooded and waste material came into the river. Experts state that also parts of Flanders will be under water in the future, and what to say about the 3000 landfills that are next to the seaside in UK. It is clear that with climate change flooding and landfills might become an issue, as today we cannot image the effect of flooding on landfills. However, Eddy Wille also mentions the opportunities to use landfills and more specific the technique of ELFM (enhanced landfill mining) to store storm water. Landfills are mostly locations without housing and some material recovered from the landfill can be used to make the basin. You can find the entire presentation here.
