This presentation was held at the thematic event focussed on interim landfill use in Almere on June 6, 2018.

Timo Heimovaara (TU Delft) held the presentation on behalf of Rob Coomans (WUR). Central question in this presentation is to determine when leachate is “clean enough” to be released to the environment. Therefor leachate target values need to be set that fit in the existing policy and are landfill specific (depending on buffering capacity and local conditions). It should be taken into consideration that there is attenuation from the landfill to the unsaturated zone before going into the groundwater when setting these target values (as depicted in the conceptual model). Some generic and landfill specific assumptions were described that can be introduced in to the reactive transport model Orchestra.
