Demetris Demetriou (Department of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Rural development and Environment, Cyprus) presented some aspects of waste shipment in Cyprus.
Cyprus is a small country with limited possibilities to treat waste, therefore waste is often shipped to surrounding regions for treatment. Main target of Cyprus is to minimize and if possible eliminate the illegal shipments of wastes by controlling destination countries depending type of wastes, type of management (disposal or recovery) and environmentally sound management treatment. Therefore a waste shipment control plan is in place that arranges the exit points, the number of shipments, number of inspections, … . Cyprus is active in many European projects on this topic.
