From October 22-24, 2018 the World Conference of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) was held in Kuala Lumpur. Since its inception in 1990, the ISWA Congress annually attracts researchers, scientists, young professionals, and policy makers from around the world to network and exchange scientific and technical data policies and case studies on a wide range of solid waste management issues. The conference offers a critical platform to bring about positive action and cutting-edge innovation toward sustainable solid waste management with a think global, act local approach. This three-day event attracted moreover 1,200 delegates from across the globe.
Our partner Eddy Wille from OVAM participated at the session Climate change and Landfills. His presentation ‘Flooding Risks at Old Landfill Sites. Linear Economy Meets Climate Change’ focused on the challenges of the traditional containment strategies and the changing environment around the former landfills. He emphasized the importance of exchange of knowledge and experiences and gave an overview of the Interreg COCOON project.
During the same conference René Rosendahl, member of the EURELCO network, gave an introduction on Enhanced Landfill Mining. He also stated the need to learn from each other on this innovative way of managing former landfills.
