Islands face unique challenges in waste management where the individual characteristics of each island (e.g. population, size, proximity to mainland,…) has a significant impact on the possibilities deemed practically feasible.
Quite often the limiting factor on practical solutions is financial. Many islands are limited in size and thus produce smaller waste streams, thus inhibiting the economy-of-scale aspect.
In the case of Malta, a government owned private entity manages waste streams with their income dependent on self-generated income, government and EU funding.
