The Interreg Europe programme level event dealing with regional smart specialisation strategies  (RIS3) was organised in Brussels on 25 September 2019. Representing Regions 4Food Interreg Europe project, South Transdanubian Regional Innovation Agency (HU) attended the whole day program.

The core message of the policy learning platform event was to focus on success and failure factors of  RIS3s, throughout the lifecycle of such strategies, starting from strategy creation, ending at monitoring and capitalising the derived lessons learnt. These were the partners of co-financed Interreg Europe projects who took part on this programme level event, so as to share their relevant experiences and to learn from other regions. The discussion also drove attention to the role what RIS3 plays in the Interreg Europe action planning and policy influencing process.

Keywords of successful smart specialisation in the agrifood sector, based on expert presentations  and hands on experiences of Interreg Europe project partners, are the following:

  • direct contribution to the industrial transition taking part in the concerned region,
  • as part of the helix system of each region, technology-innovation diffusion is needed to be m harnessed,
  • regional economies should cultivate active international linkages.

Last, but not least collection and/or availability of relevant territorial data effectively fosters evidence  based RIS3 policy making.
