Extremadura is one of the first Spanish regions in committing to the path towards sustainability. For this reason, it has been recently approved the “Extremadura Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 (PEIEC)”, aligned with the objectives established by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan.
PEIEC 2021-2030 represents Extremadura´s commitment and contribution to the national and European effort in the energy transition and in the fight against climate change.
The general objective of this Plan is to move forward in the energy transition of the Extremadura economy, establishing a political, social and economic roadmap oriented towards climate neutrality in the region by the 2030 horizon.
The PEIEC establishes the actions to be implemented in the specific areas of mitigation, adaptation, research and social activation to face climate change in the next decade. For this, some quantified objectives are established in terms of reducing GHG emissions, penetration of renewable energies and energy efficiency, in such a way that the economic and social development of the region is stimulated, while minimizing the impacts derived from climate change and in nature, associated with the Extremadura energy system.
Given the Extremadura geographical, social and productive characteristics, PEIEC focus on mitigation of climate change, developing measures to reach a low carbon economy, reduce energy consumption, as well as promote sustainable alternatives to technologies and processes that involve high energy consumption.
Regarding energy system and GHG emissions, the objectives established in the PEIEC for 2030 are:
- 10,03% reduction of GHG emissions in Extremadura compared to the emissions of 2017.
- 9,8% increase of GHG emission absorption capacity of sinks.
- 40,6% contribution of renewable primary energy and 35,7% of renewable final energy by 2030.
- 22% reduction of primary energy by 2030 compared to 2017.
- 99% renewable contribution in electricity generation by 2030
This plan will involve an investment of 17,240 million euros, which means an important contribution to the economic revitalization and modernization of the region.
