New modern water heating systems have been implemented in the Višnjik sports center.
The main problem was that the cost of heating the water was very high and the use of fuel oil as an energy source had a great impact on the environment. By replacing fuel oil as an energy source with natural gas and installing a solar water heating system, the cost has been greatly reduced. Ninety-six vacuum tube collectors have been installed on the roof of the swimming pool for hot water preparation, the existing boiler room has been reconstructed to use natural gas as an energy source for heating. The estimated annual savings for the Višnjik Centre after calculating all impacts is almost €84,000, as well as reducing the amount of CO2 emissions into the air by 223 tons per year.

Resources needed

The total cost of project: €353.056,58
- Energy Efficiency Fund (40%) 160.552,50 euro
- City of Zadar (60%) 192.504.08

Evidence of success

With the implementation of the project in relation to the base year 2012, every year there were greater and greater energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions. Annual energy savings in monetary terms amounted to EUR 83,684.20, while the annual reduction in CO2 emissions amounted to 223 tons.

Difficulties encountered

The main challenge for us was to start renovating or upgrading the newly renovated sports center with newer and more cost-effective devices for reducing energy and CO2 emissions. Many who participated in the project were skeptical and had no idea how it was possible to save so much.

Potential for learning or transfer

This is a great example of how we achieve great results through several corrections and the installation of new devices for energy efficiency and CO2 reduction. Višnjik Sports Centre is a gathering place for all ages from small to large, and there is a very large number of visits on a daily basis. The project has brought concrete results and savings so it is a great example of what is invested and gained.
