Over the recent years the Center combining different science branches has become one of the leading scientific institutions in Lithuania.
CENTER FOR PHYSICAL SCIENCES AND TECHNOLOGY (FTMC) is the largest scientific research institution in Lithuania carrying out a unique fundamental research and technological development works in scientific fields of laser technologies, optoelectronics, nuclear physics, organic chemistry, bio and nanotechnologies, electrochemical material science, etc.

FTMC was established in 2010 by joining institutes of Chemistry, Physics, Semiconductor Physics in Vilnius and Textile institute in Kaunas. Over the recent years the Center combining different science branches has become one of the leading scientific institutions in Lithuania.

In 2016 FTMC moved to new building at Sunrise valley equipped with new facilities containing modern technological infrastructure. This change required nearly 10 years of thorough preparation: starting from definitions of scientific trends, evaluation of scientific resources and considerations on technological backgrounds; continuation with writings of feasibility studies and investment projects and, finally, careful installation of the newest equipment, precise accommodation of all technical services and building a managing system in a smart new environment of the National Centre for Physical and Technological Sciences.

Stakeholders:
Ministry of Education, Science and Sport
Beneficiaries:
Business entities dealing with laser technologies, chemical engineering, optoelectronics, organic chemistry, textile, nuclear physics, environmental science

Resources needed

Funding: 69,2M Eur (37,65M for construction, 31M for equipment, 580K for equipment insurance, publicity, salaries of project administrators and executors)

Evidence of success

FTMC is known worldwide as a leader in the fields of terahertz physics, electroless coating plating and photonics. FTMC becomes an indispensable part of the sector, searching for and being able to find systemic solutions in the research and business cooperation chain, turning high-level research knowledge into products and services.

1 Euro of spent generates 2,236 Euros (2019)
16 spin-offs established
Contracts of economic entities:
2017 – 3,71M Eur
2018 – 3,62M Eur
2019 – 1,77M Eur

Difficulties encountered

Political agreement and reaching consensus between policy makers, researchers, and administrative staff of institutions. It is difficult to implement a reform and consolidate R&D institutions. It takes a lot of time, commitment, persuasion before the planned reforms can happen

Potential for learning or transfer

Prior to the scientific institute reform, the potential of Lithuanian science institutions was fragmented, and activities were carried out by 35 state and university research institutes. Thus, the transformation was aimed at concentrating the available human and material resources of research and experimental development (R&D), creating conditions for the most efficient use of R&D potential in solving tasks important to the country and more rational use of EU structural and state budget funds.
