Environmentally friendly packaging, composed by biodegradable labels, made out of cellulose, and compostable nets, that permits to avoid plastic packaging.
The name of the best practice is Bio Packaging but behind these two simple words there is a great work in research & development and in technological innovation. Mitilicoltori spezzini is the cooperative of Ligurian mussel farmers. Their good practice consists in an environmentally friendly packaging, composed by a biodegradable labels and compostable nets. The labels are made out of cellulose and permit to avoid plastic packaging. The main objective is sustainability, but also a major offer for clients, especially for those who are more environmentally conscious. It is important also for the producers to be updated on the market’s new trends and nowadays people are much more careful to choose sustainable products. So this biopackaging can satisfy a bigger variety of clients, accessing also new markets, and at the same time it can help protecting the environment and safeguard the planet.

Resources needed

The development of the idea came from a client’s special request. The project has been self-funded so far but a financial support by local authorithies will be required if the project grows and aims at extending.

Evidence of success

The first and most important result is the raise of a public awareness on sustainable aquaculture: sustainability is a topic that is becoming every day more and more important as well as decisive in the choices and behaviors, even in purchasing. We can say this good practice helped the companies involved to access new markets and therefore to increase productivity. It is important to remark that it also fostered the adoption of an innovative management.

Difficulties encountered

To work with a different material has been an interesting challenge that requested some news adaptations for the machines used to assemble the innovative packaging.

Potential for learning or transfer

This best practice can be definitely transferable to other interested subjects, considering that the needs are common across European regions and also because the world attention on environmental issues is growing day by day. Moreover for private companies it can also be an instrument to access new markets and get more clients, pursuing the goal of respecting the environment.
