An innovative sustainable mobility solution created with the help of national and European funds.
The E-TWOW (Electric Two Wheels) kick scooter is an innovative Light Electric Vehicle produced by Nextrom Industries SRL.
The company was founded by the Romanian engineer Sorin Sirbu who also invented the E-TWOW scooter. E-TWOW is an international concept established in 2015 from a strong partnership between a Chinese factory, Jinhua E-Twow Technology (that produces the scooters) and two companies from Craiova (that manage the sales market). The factory in Craiova produces the software for E-TWOW scooters and electric bikes as well as smart docking stations to charge two-wheel electric vehicles and electric bicycles.
E-TWOW was the first scooter to integrate a kinetic energy recovery system, only used for race cars at that time. It’s lightweight and the 3-point folding system, made it one of the most convenient personal transportation vehicles, as it could be carried and stored easily.
The project is labelled as "Competitiveness Pole" in South-West Oltenia Region and was produced and delivered with affordable prices for domestic and export markets.
Currently, the market for electric scooters is developed in over 50 countries thanks to its low weight and excellent handling. Their related project is Ride Sharing, a scooter rental system that offers as many people as possible the opportunity to use a green and efficient transport system, adapted to the challenges of urban environment. The company has understood the challenges of urban transportation.

Resources needed

The project was funded by SOP IEC 2007-13, co-financed by ERDF. The total investment was 5M Euro, of which 3.5M Euro was the grant for the investment that the company has received. Human resources working on it were 70 people.

Evidence of success

The company's representatives claim to have reached the top of the preferences of electric scooter users thanks to its low weight and excellent handling.
The turnover increased from 805,000 Euro in 2014 to 1,150,000 Euro in the years 2015-2018; the number of employees increased from 9 people in 2014 to 70 people in 2018. The plant production capacity and technological standard improved substantially.

Potential for learning or transfer

This is an innovative solution to mobility and pollution challenges that brings electro mobility to urban areas. Therefore, it can be potentially transferred to other regions facing similar challenges and interested in reducing GHG emission.
