Hiking tourism extended to peri-urban areas for the promotion of sustainable development and regional attractiveness
In Aristoteli Chalkidikis, efforts for place branding of the peri-urban area around the town Stagira, has resulted in the creation of the Aristotelian Route, an outdoors hiking pathway, connecting the new town of Stagira to the ancient city of Stagira, which is now an archaeological site. Furthermore, the Aristotelian Route is not only meant to be an individual route, but also part of a wider network of Aristotelian routes, as well as other culturally defined routes such as the Mount Athos borderline routes, and more. As such, there is a wider effort for ‘heritage hiking tourism’ in the area.
A hiking touristic package like the one promoted in Aristoteli, would include national, regional and local authorities (Hellenic Ministry of Tourism, Regional Unit of Halkidiki, Municipality of Aristotle, etc.), third sector organizations (hiking associations, historical or cultural associations, etc.), local community (residents, employees, especially in the tourism sector, hotel owners, etc.), suppliers and contractors, clients (visitors, schools, etc.), and competitors (similar or nearby tourist attractions in the region and elsewhere, etc.).

Resources needed

The resources that are used include mainly natural, cultural and human resources, which are covered by the Municipality of Aristotle.

Evidence of success

Hiking tourism, and generally, tourism practices that are related to alternative and agrotouristic experiences may be said to be on the rise because of the ways modern human life has come to be distanciated from nature and all the benefits it offers, such as psychological well-being, relaxation, mild exercise by walking, fresh air, and so on. That's what Aristotle's Route achieve all thiw years.
