Intercept larger quantities of used vegetable oils to be exploited economically and, at the same time, avoid improper disposal.
The Good Practice responds to the need to intercept greater quantities of used vegetable oils, which, if not collected, could be handled incorrectly by users, such as being poured into the sewer system.
Households deposit their bottles containing used vegetable oils into the big yellow bins, that are located in a convenient position.
The bin has a capacity of 800 litres and it is replaced three quarters of its capacity.

Resources needed

The revenues from the sale of the collected used oils cover the costs of installing and emptying the bin.
The Council has to cover only the costs of organizing the service and of an effective communicational campaign.

Evidence of success

After the implementation of the Good Practice scheme there was a significant increase in the quantities of used vegetable oil collected (+300% in three years):
year 2018 – 366 kg
year 2019 – 11.460 kg
year 2020 – 10.113 kg

Difficulties encountered

Critical aspects:
• Presence of non-compliant materials in the bin;
• The scheme needs to be supported with appropriate information and an effective communicational campaign.
It is necessary to promote the service and the rules on different channels in order to reach the whole population.

Potential for learning or transfer

It is important to devise an awareness campaign from the very beginning reaching all citizens to make them understand the importance of used vegetable oils collection.
