The Qdrive monitoring system provides information about driving experiences and energy efficiency for busdrivers to optimize driving.
Sustainability is becoming more important in public transport. Driving more sustainably is something that is best learned during and after a bus ride. To support bus drivers, Qbuzz introduced the Qdrive program. Qdrive provides insights and tools for the bus driver about driving behavior.
In the (electric) buses, the drivers themselves can gain insight into how sustainable they drive. This is done by a small display containing signals that indicate how sustainable the bus ride is at that moment, it contains, a red, orange, and green light. The green light means the most fuel-efficient.
In addition to this direct feedback, during a pilot phase, the driving comfort of the passengers and drivers was also measured during the bus ride, this was done with an activity tracker that also monitors heart rate and gave feedback on the experience.
The data on sustainable driving and driving comfort from the bus ride is analyzed and can be viewed afterward in an app on a tablet provided by Qbuzz. This information helps the bus driver to understand how well he or she scores on sustainability and driving comfort. An explanation is given about the analysis and tips are provided to improve driving comfort and sustainable driving.
To further support the driver in addition to the analysis and tips, there are videos explaining how to increase driving comfort and improve sustainable driving.

Resources needed

Optimized network capabilities, buses that can be equipped with technology.
Analysis of the data gathered through the sensors and tracking. Development of app to visualize the data and design the interface. Courses for bus drivers are needed and management and maintenance of the application

Evidence of success

Still ongoing.
The project is still in the pilot phase.
Bus drivers use less fuel/energy.
Real-time information about sustainable driving
It optimizes their driving capability to drive more efficiently.
It helps the bus drivers get more insights and helps them to improve.
Less energy creates economic and sustainable benefits.
At this moment there are public results available.

Difficulties encountered

The willingness of bus drivers to participate in the Q-drive program. The Qdrive program creates anonymized data.
Provide the right insights to the bus driver. Giving bus drivers the confidence that it is about improving their driving behavior and not about some kind of control of the company

Potential for learning or transfer

Focus on innovation is most of the time on technological and business parts. This good practice focuses on the implementation of real-time data analysis and visualization combined with an app that provides direct feedback and tools for bus drivers.
