Slovenian biodiversity data providers gathered for the 3rd local stakeholder meeting to discuss the potential application of the biodiversity audit approached developed by BID-REX partner, the University of East Anglia, UK.
Ljubljana Marsh Nature Park is a BID-REX pilot area and is included in the Natura 2000 network. 14 out of 53 species found here are protected by the Bird or Habitat directive and have been selected as priority species for conservation. However, this approach only considers species that are endangered at the European level and does not include, for example, regional specialists that are restricted to Ljubljana Marsh and some other rare areas.
Partners from UEA clearly demonstrated that evidence based biodiversity information can provide an objective model for prioritization and cost-effective conservation, applicable to regions of Europe where biodiversity has been well characterised.
