Managing development and urban planning has an impact on biodiversity, the environment and the well-being of people. Being able to reconcile the different demands coming from different socio-economic sectors is a complex challenge that requires the involvement of different stakeholders – including public administrations, businesses and environmental organisations for example.
On 25 September 2018 the Marche Region met technicians and Natura 2000 protected areas local administrators to disseminate and share information and updates about the BID-REX project.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to set the collaboration between regional and local authorities, and experts on the local strategic framework in order to improve local policies and the use of biodiversity information.
The meeting aimed to improve the sustainability of policies and to safeguard natural heritage and ecosystem services by including biodiversity information in the policy-making process. Participants shared their opinions on this theme and discussed how they could collaborate with the Marche Region.
The final objective is to develop a sustainable pathway to giving biodiversity value, in areas both within and outside the Regional Network of Natura 2000. This will be achieved using the policy instrument Regional Ecological Network which will take existing data and use it to interpret the landscape in an eco-functional way. This will in turn result in positive effects by interacting with other regional and local policies in the fields of sustainable tourism, agriculture, environmental evaluations, regional landscape planning and urban planning.
The meeting was useful for sharing the roadmap of the project. This roadmap will lead to a methodological instrument for achieving outputs that can be replicated in different local contexts and finally approved by the Region. Pilot areas will be used to test the implementation of this policy instrument.
